[mpich-discuss] Very long configuration time

Please double check that you are actually using a local disk (e.g. 
"df"). If that's the case, you're likely facing a slow disk access. I'd 
say that there's nothing you can be doing wrong to increase the 
configuration time. You could disable parts of MPICH you won't use, such 
as --disable-cxx --disable-fortran --disable-romio, but that will help 
only for the compilation stage.
